GARDEN CLUB

MES Garden Club is a PTO-sponsored club run by volunteer parents and a teacher sponsor. We hold garden-based project events throughout the school year. Garden Club is free to join, supported by donations, and MES students can register in mid-August for the entire school year. Once registered, students can then be signed up for individual events during the year. For safety and capacity reasons, students must be registered and signed up for events ahead of time. Events follow a range of activities from planting, investigation, learning, discussing garden safety, listening to guest speakers, garden themed crafts, weeding, watering, and making planning decisions for the MES Gathering Garden. The MES Gathering Garden is located at the back of the school, between the main building and the gym.

RUN CLUB (KILOMETER KIDS)

  • What: Kilometer Kids running program, 10-week session

  • When: Thursdays 2:30-3:30 (after school)

  • 2023-24 Dates: Thursday, February 29th - Thursday, May 9th

  • Where: Montgomery Campus

  • Who: Students in 1st - 5th grade (Kindergarten for coaches’ kids only)

Registration Link: https://atlantatrackclub.leagueapps.com/clubteams/4156126-montgomery-elementary-kilometer-kids-participant-registration---spring-2024

Run Club Coaches Needed: No running experience or coaching experience needed! Kilometer Kids provides great resources and you will be partnered with other MES parents. Also, if you are a coach, your kindergartner can participate.

To register for Run Club, the parent/guardian will first be prompted to make an account in LeagueApps, then add a child profile for each kid they plan to register, and then will be able to select their Montgomery grade team in the dropdown in the registration form. Please note that if you do not see your child's grade group listed in the dropdown menu, that means that that group is already full. Please do not just select another grade group as this removes a spot that is meant to be available for kids who are eligible for that group and will cause issues for our registration process. Instead, please sign up for the waitlist and list "Montgomery, Grade" for your child when asked which team you are interested in. We will notify you if a spot becomes available and your child can join.

Please email Erica Robinson at ericarobinson07@gmail.com or Faith McNiff at faithdavidson@yahoo.com with questions.

STEAM TEAM (Odyssey of the mind)

We build upon what K-5 students learn in the classroom and combine it with their interests in the STEAM fields of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math to solve unique, open-ended problems.  The kids learn about the creative process, a step-by-step approach that helps students better understand problems, ask better questions, come up with solutions, learn from failure, and celebrate their achievements.

Ultimately, kids learn vital life and career skills—creative thinking, critical thinking, public speaking, and collaborative problem-solving—that help them feel empowered and set them up for success in the future.

What are the programs?

We inspire young people to imagine and innovate today so they become the creative and collaborative leaders of tomorrow via two programs:

STEAM Kids is a 4-week after-school extracurricular that introduces K-5 kids to out-of-the-box, creative thinking with fun, interactive, team-based challenges. Students must complete and attend the full series to audition for our World Finals-qualifying competition program, STEAM Team.

  • Time: Wednesdays 2:30 - 4:00 pm

  • Duration: August, 4 weeks

  • Travel: None (occurs at Montgomery)

  • Cost: $50/student

OM@MES alumni are invited to participate in STEAM Kids for free as program assistants to hone their leadership skills.

STEAM Team prepares Montgomery's most creative K-5th students for regional, state, and possibly world competitions, where their creativity, teamwork, and improvisational skills are tested with challenging STEAM-based problem sets. This program demands a lot from students, but it delivers even more in return!  The program requires weekly after-school practices, weekend collaborations, travel to an all-day workshop(s), and an interscholastic competition in North Georgia. In return, the kids participate in the excitement of fun-filled, zany "mental gymnastic" competitions.

  • Location: Wednesdays 2:30 - 4:00 pm + 2 hours every weekend

  • Duration: September through March, 20 weeks

  • Travel: Yes (workshops, regional, state, and world tournaments)

  • Cost: $150/student

  • Required: 1 adult volunteer per student (i.e. weekday coach, weekend coach, snack provider, collaboration host, workshop volunteer, or competition judge)

Families should be aware of additional costs & commitments if the student's team advances to the State Tournament in April ($250/student + car travel) or World Finals in May ($2,250 + air travel).
